Vindreken er kjent som eit av Noregs mest måla fjellmotiv. Frå 1800-talet kom mange store kunstnarar til Balestrand for å male m.a. Esefjorden og Vindreken, som reiser seg midt i fjordlandskapet.
Dette er den brattaste turruta vi har i Balestrand. Ho går frå Indre Ese 1200 høgdemeter rett opp ryggen på framsida. Men følgjer ein merkinga er det trygt å gå utan bruk av klatreutstyr. Her får ein verkeleg valuta for strevet, med ei mektig utsikt over fjordlandskapet og det alpine fjellandskapet i Esefjelli.
Vindreken består av 2 toppar, der den bakre (Vestre Vindreken) er noko høgare. Best utsikt får du likevel på den fremste toppen, Austre Vindreken (1259 moh.), og særleg bør ein nyte utsikten langs stupkanten på nordsida (NB! følg stivardane og ikkje legg ut på denne turen i dårleg vêr).
Stien er merka berre opp til Austre Vindreken. Men ein kan òg velje å fortsette på umerka sti fram til den bakre toppen (NB! Det er farleg å starte nedstiginga mellom toppane) og ned derifrå mot brevatnet og vidare mot kraftlina, som ein følgjer ned til ein møter merka sti frå hytta i Grisagrø.
Vindreken is one of Norway’s most painted mountain peaks. From the 1800s and onwards, many famous painters have come to Balestrand to paint Vindreken and the Esefjord. It is the steepest marked route in Balestrand. The route starts at 10m and goes to a height of 1200m up the ridge to Vindreken.
If you follow the marked route it is safe to go without climbing equipment. However, this hike is very demanding, suitable only for experienced hikers with good stamina. It requires good hiking boots and equipment. The route has steep and technically difficult sections The trail follows a narrow ridge, with several sections requiring exposed scrambling. Do not take this route in bad weather!
At the top of Vindreken you are well rewarded for your efforts with a fantastic view over the fjord landscape and the impressive Esefjelli mountains. Vindreken consists of two summits, the one behind (Vestre Vindreken) is slightly higher, but the best views are from the one at the front Austre Vindreken (1,259 m). The view from the cliff edge on the north side is particularly spectacular. Follow the cairns, and do not take this route in bad weather.
The trail is marked only up to Austre Vindreken. But you can take an alternative way down via an unmarked path to the summit behind (Vestre Vindreken) and then from there towards the glacier lake and power lines and further down to the cabin at Grisagrø where you meet a marked trail going down. Do not take this route in bad weather. Do not begin your descent between the two summits. It is easy to get stuck!
